FB Super Heroes Status Updates

After about two weeks when females started an interesting campaign by stating their bra color in their FB status, which was thought of as a campaign for growing breast cancer awareness, now it’s been noticed that male FB users are up to something. Tracking the pattern, they are updating the status with the names of Comic Super Heroes. The real reason is not disclosed yet and the source of origin remains unknown as was the case with FB bra color status updates. Is it that, there is some kind of Super Hero Meet happening soon? Or is this a cause for supporting Haiti? Who is behind all this? What is the motif? Who earns or get popularity remains a question unanswered.

Whatever, it seems that boys are enjoying updating their status. Many seem confident updating their status, some “go with the crowd” kind, and some making it real funny. Some are adding a list of super heroes to their status, some adding a single name. Some status seems telling the secrets but when pondered, keep people guessing. One was something like this: French Ironman followed by Spanish Wolverine (The idea of adding French and Spanish prior to the names keep people guessing, as Ironman is American Hero and Wolverine is Canadian). Yet another was: For me, Superman and Spiderman goes well with Iron Man. But its the Wolverine which is winning the race. (Is there some sort of comic series coming where all these are playing a part?)

It’s still not clear about the origin and the objective. Time will explain the reason behind this Super Heroes status update in Facebook. A prank? A cause campaign? Popularity De Anonymity? Or maybe it will remain a mystery for ages to come. Whatever be the reason preliminary observations is that people are loving to update their status with these Ten(10) super heroes:

Batman, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Superman, Robin, Daredevil, Wolverine, Captain America, Spiderman.

I leave you with a brief detail collected from Wikipedia with their images, so that if you come up with some idea please comment. Let us find out the real reason. We can’t always breathe our day clueless for these silly status updates.

Basanta Panchami - Knowledge for All and Always

Hinduism is one of the many religions which have immense impact on how people practice their existence.  Faith in gods and goddesses is the key to believing in one’s self. It is a matter of fact that the count of deities in Hinduism is numerous, and hence the numbers of worship rituals are also in abundance. One of the many is Basanta Panchami (or Shree Panchami ), which falls on 20 January 2010 this year. This is the special day when people worship goddess Saraswati, the goddess of learning and wisdom. It is the special fifth day in the waxing moon period (Shukla Paksha Panchami), the fortnight of the lunar month of Maagh. This day is marked as the beginning of the spring season as the name implies, Basanta meaning spring. Goddess Saraswati, the consort of LordBrahma (Lord of Creation), is the one who gives the essence (sara) of our own self (swa) as her name implies. In entirety, she is considered as the personification of all knowledge - arts, sciences, crafts and other skills.

On this occasion goddess Saraswati is prayed and devoted in various names and precision. She bears in her the mark of the symbol of supreme vedantic knowledge. On this day everyone who has faith in deity and is involved in experiencing the learning curve, worship their belongings - pens, notebooks, books, even computers and the likes, that aids to collate knowledge. Artists worship their valued instruments so that the goddess favors them to become wise and knowledgeable with their art and skills. The most important aspect besides worshipping is that children are given their first alphabet lessons. It is believed that making the kids start reading and writing on this spiritual day will help associate virtue of the wisdom throughout their lifetime.

SaraswotiSpecial celebrations take place at different shrines of goddess Saraswati. Nil Saraswati Temple atGairidhara, Kathmandu and Saraswati Kunda in Patan are some of the important places for the devotees to visit on this day. During the reign of the king in Nepal in the recent past, this occasion was marked with special gaiety at Basantapur Darbur Square.  The then king and other special dignitaries would welcome the season of spring as the band plays the traditional song of spring. These days this tradition of celebration is done on a lesser scale and the excitement seems to be on the low note. On this day, yellow color is given special preference in clothing and assorted tint for sweets as it is taken as the representation of spring indicated by the yellow of the mustard crop. This day is also regarded as a very favorable day for marriages, and any time of the day is considered auspicious for the main ritual to proceed, which otherwise needs coherence with the astrological charts.

There are many symbolic illustration of the goddess in shrines as they are carved in stones. But the portraits which are sold in plenty in the market for this special day depicts one of the two postures. One is the standing stance and the other is sitting in a special position, Padmashana. On both instances she has a beautiful and elegant presence. Her expression is serene, calm, and her eyes are full of compassion. In the portrayal she is clad in white saari, seated (or standing) on a white lotus representing purity and brilliance. She has four hands, of which one is used for holding sacred scriptures and the other a lotus (representing true knowledge, as lotus is clean amidst muddy water). The other two hands are depicted playing the musical instrument Veena, representing music of love and life. The four hands signifies four key aspects of human behavior in learning; mind, intellect, alertness and ego. She is accompanied by a swan and a peacock selectively depending on different portraits. The swan is known for its peculiar characteristic of being capable of separating water from milk, indicating the idea of separating worst from the superior. When represented seating on a peacock she reminds us that wisdom suppresses ego.

The Saraswati Vandana, is an important recitation on this day:Saraswoti Maya Drista Veena Pustaka Dhaarini, Hamsabaahana Samyukta Bidhya Daanam Karo Tume. - Seeking knowledge and wisdom from the goddess who holds Veena, Sacred scriptures (Pustaka) and travel on a Swan (Hamsabaahana).

Celebrating Basanta Panchami is a message in totality. Irrespective of what religion we believe or practice, it is a fact that knowledge is the basis of all religion. Also, in this fast paced world Knowledge Management is the need of the hour. Manage information, share it and help people become more knowledgeable. By doing this you will be helping to integrate the world and spread the message “Knowledge for All and Always”.

Maaghe Sankranti - A Nepali Festival

Maaghe Sankranti (or Sakrati) is a Nepali festival, similar to solstice festivals in many other traditions is observed every year on the first day of the month of Maagh. The month of Maagh usually starts during mid January and ends in mid February. This festival takes place around 21 days after the tropical winter solstice (between December 20 and 23) that marks the starting of Uttarayana, which means northward journey of Sun and this year it falls on 15 January 2010. This day is also considered as the coldest of the season (may not be in reality though), signifying longer and warmer days ahead. It also brings end the month of Poush, the month prior to Maagh, where most of the holy ceremonies are forbidden for many trivial and unreasoned religious grounds. This festival is also called Maaghi Parva and Makar Sankranti amongst many other. Maaghi Parva implies a festival in the month of Maagh, where Parva relates to festival, is the other name generally used by Tharu community in Nepal. Sankranti means transmigration of Sun from one Raashi (zodiac in Hindu Astrology) to the other. Hence there are 12 such Sankranti’s and 12 such zodiac in all. However, the Sankranti festival usually refers to Makar Sankranti which relates to the transition of the Sun from Dhanu Raashi (Sagittarius) to Makar Raashi(Capricorn).

On this day pilgrims swarm in at river confluence for a holy dip in the water, despite freezing temperature. Some resort to only sprinkling water above their head because of the cold. In addition to the customary sacred plunge by the brave at heart, this year it is a solar eclipse on this day, which supports the holy practice of taking dip in the river after the eclipse. Devotees, many of them are elderly, take holy dips at the convergence points at Devghat, Barah Kshetra, Triveni, Dolalghat, Sankhamool and other sites all across Nepal. Big religious fair are held on this day at Devghat (near Narayanghat) and Kankai (in Jhapa district) where many people gather for the spiritual feel by worshipping the shrines. Many travel around for fun from different parts of Nepal and India.

In addition to holy bathing and worship of shrines, this festival carries along with it different items to eat so that it will lead to a healthier life ahead. Specially, Ghyu (clarified butter) is used to cook many items as it is religiously accepted notion that the use of ghyu wipes all the impurity. Teel Laddus(sesame seeds ball mixed with jaggery and rounded), Ghya-Chaaku (assemblage of ghee and chaaku – a popular condiment of Newar community), Shakkharkhand (sweet potato), Tarool (Yam), Khichadi (mixture of rice and lentils with clarified butter as the thickener) are the special menu items for this day. It is a normal customary in Nepal to invite married daughters and close relatives during festivities, and Maaghe Sankranti is not an exception. Families come together and share these delights. There is yet another tradition of massaging the body with mustard oil and then basking in the sun with the idea of keeping the body warm and relaxed in this cold day.
Any religious activity is marked with legend of some kinds. One of the many, this day is taken as the commemoration of the death of Bhishma Pita:maha, the elderly grandfather ofPadavas and Kauravas. Bhishma Pita:maha, who had the power to control his own death, happened to choose to die on the day of Maaghe Sankranti. Therefore it is believed that one who die on this day achieve Moksha, a release from rebirth cycle.

The Puranasay that on this day Sun visits the house of his son Shani, who is the swami of Makar Rashi. These father and son do not ordinarily get along nicely, but in spite of many difference between each other Lord Sun makes it a point to meet his son. He visits his son on this day and stays there for a month. Hence this day also symbolizes the importance of special relationship of father and son. It is the son who has the responsibility to carry forward his father’s dream and the continuity of the family.

The other legend is related to sesame seeds and its wide usage during this day. It is understood that a merchant from the village of Bhadgaon (Bhaktapur), had never ending supply of sesame seeds in his store. The more he took out the sesame seeds the supply never depleted. Later, he found out an idol ofLord Vishnu hidden deep beneath the seeds on this day. Since this day Teel Madhav – a special representation of Lord Vishnu is worshipped with the belief that lord will continue to be generous in the supply of food and wealth. Yet another legend is that it was on this day when Lord Vishnu ended the ever increasing terror of the Asuras (Devil) by finishing them off and burying their heads under the Mandara Parvata. So this occasion also represents the end of negativities and beginning of an era of righteous living.

This solstice festival is celebrated all over South Asia with some regional variations. In India it is celebrated by different names in different states, like Makar Sankranti in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharastra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Orrissa and West Bengal, Bihu in Assam, Uttarayan in Gujarat and Rajasthan, Lohri in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and Pongal in Tamilnadu. In other countries too, the day is celebrated under different names and in different ways likeSongkran in Thailand, Pi Ma Lao in Laos and Thingyan in Myanmar.

This festival identifies a period of enlightenment, peace, prosperity and happiness.

Facebook Color Status – Fun or a Real Campaign

One of the popular social networking website, Facebook (FB) has gone colorful. Syllables speaking single word or phrases are representing color. Since the afternoon of 8th January 2010, a trend is seen where females are updating their FB status with the color of their bra like Pink or Black and White Polka dotsor Beige and so on. Many were in fact puzzled status updates. And the majority does not have any idea about the Pink Ribbon as well. Is the bra color FB status a conspiracy to make Facebook hotter?  Facebook status colors have already become a hot search on the net. Or is there something absurd and specious going on?

A rumor is on air that it is a way to raise awareness for breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today. Interestingly, breast cancer is about 100 times more common in women than in men, but survival rates are equal in both sexes. It is the month of October which is celebrated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During October, people raise money by organizing activities such as theme parties or a Pink Day (when employees wear pink clothing or accessories) at work. The money raised is donated to the organizers choice of breast cancer care or research programs. But amusingly, no reason for the timing as such is yet seen for this so called awareness campaign in FB, when it is January now. By the way, it’s a general notion that men can't take to the bra color FB status. However, if you are a male and your mood is colorful, who says you can’t write colors in your status? Interpretation does not matter much.

One of the most interesting things about this effort that went viral is that no one seems to know who started it, or the motivation behind it. So, it will be interesting to see what information comes to light in the coming days and who might capitalize on it.
Some folks aren't so high on this campaign. There is aFacebookBraFAIL tag on Twitter now where some are criticizing it as a lost opportunity for advocacy, given the lack of clarity or clear call to action in the status updates.  But regardless of what you think - brilliant viral marketing or a missed opportunity, the fact of the matter is that people are talking.

Facebook Inc. said it hasn't been able to find out who came up with the idea, circuitously stating we are clean in this matter. Andrea Rader, a spokeswoman for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, said the group was not behind the campaign but said, "It is a terrific tool for raising awareness. We just hope people act on it - get educated and get a mammogram”.  Komen group is one of the pioneer foundations which have taken the breast cancer movement globally. The other speculation for this clarification from Andrea Rader was also because of Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure Camp, incidentally seems like a 3 day campaign in FB, which in fact is anytime register kind of 3-day camp program and the proceeds goes for the cause.

Whatever be the actual reason for this FB hit, updating your bra color will not help much but only end up in fun. Someone updated this FB status, Black texts spelling colors, revealing your privacy (if u r true :-)) is GOOD for fun rather than a campaign. But getting a "MAMMOGRAM" done is even BETTER...”

The message communicated by the above quoted status seems loud and clear. There's no word yet on the origin or the ultimate goal of the campaign. But if you really want to support this cause which is yet to be concluded, the foremost step to be a part of this campaign is to better consult a doctor for yourMammogram first. If you are in addition much interested to support this cause you can volunteer for breast cancer awareness. But only updating your bra colors will get yourself exposed. And just in case this campaign gets going, and reach new dimensions will you be willing to see your profile stating30 or 31 or 32 or 33… A/B/C/D… and so on? Give it a thought.

Sir Isaac Newton’s Google Doodle

The Google Doodle for Sir Isaac Newton is the first animated doodle I have seen.

When you load the Google home page you will see an Apple tree over Google ’s logo, after a second or so, one of the Apple’s drop from the tree. The logo is also missing an “o” from it.

This is to remember Sir Issac Newton and his famous gravitational theory on his birthday. Sir Isaac Newton born on 4 January 1643 was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian.
